Technical Details: Ski Mountaineering - Tofana di Rozes

The ski mountaineering ascent to Tofana di Rozes (3225 m) is a challenging itinerary, reserved for expert ski mountaineers (OSA) who want to tackle a technical climb and experience an outstanding descent in the heart of the Dolomites.

With an elevation gain of 1,200 meters—which may increase if snow-covered roads prevent access to Rifugio Dibona—this tour presents a true physical and technical challenge.

Ascent

The first section of the route follows a steady incline, allowing for quick elevation gain. Beyond the midsection, the terrain becomes more demanding, culminating in a steep and exposed ridge. In this final part, it may be necessary to carry skis and use crampons and an ice axe for safe progression.

From the summit of Tofana di Rozes, the 360° panoramic view is breathtaking, stretching across the Dolomiti Ampezzane, Marmolada, and Cristallo Group.

Descent

This descent is one of the finest in the Dolomites, featuring steep slopes, technical sections, and more fluid passages. It offers a mix of terrain and conditions that require mastery of skiing in steep and off-piste environments. In ideal conditions, the snow can provide exceptional turns throughout the descent.

Difficulty and Requirements

This tour is suitable only for expert skiers, experienced in steep and exposed terrain. Participants must be confident in handling hard snow, exposed ridges, and technical sections, both during ascent and descent.

Mandatory Equipment

The following equipment is required:

Avalanche transceiver (ARTVA), shovel, and probe

Harness, crampons, and ice axe for technical sections

The ascent is guided by a Certified Alpine Guide, who will assess the route and safety conditions, ensuring that participants can take on this challenge in the best possible way.

Ski mountaineering on Tofana di Rozes is a unique and exhilarating experience, combining adventure, technical skills, and one of the most thrilling off-piste descents in the Dolomites.
