Ascent of a medium difficulty vajo - Small Dolomites

Ascent of a medium difficulty vajo - Small Dolomites

In the Vicenza dialect, the term vajo refers to those narrow gullies that wind between the steep walls of the Piccole Dolomiti.

In winter, the numerous valleys of the Piccole Dolomiti become clogged with snow and ice, making it more or less easy to climb them with the aid of rope, ice axe and crampons.

The climb consists of a medium difficulty vajo such as the vajo Ruga della Zalica, delle Frane, Nascosto, Interrotto or similar that allows us to move on challenging but not extreme terrain with ice axe and crampons, entering the magical world of winter mountaineering.

The excursion is suitable for all those who already have experience in the use of ice axes and crampons and want to refine their technique as well as follow more challenging and satisfying itineraries.

The decision on which itinerary to take will be made one or two days in advance depending on the snow and weather conditions.

Do I have to be very fit to climb a vajo?

Yes you have to be very fit, climbing a vajo is quite a tiring activity. Going up the vajo with crampons on your feet and then going back down takes several hours, if you are a good walker who is not afraid of long treks you should have no problems.

I have never used an ice axe or crampons, can I climb a vajo?

Yes, just choose an easy or medium one from the ones offered.

Do you need a 4x4 to get to the meeting point?

Generally it is not necessary to have a four-wheel drive car, however since it is a strictly winter activity it is advisable to have winter tires and snow chains on board since you may have to face climbs and descents on snow-covered roads.

How do you behave in case of bad weather?

If the Alpine Guide deems that the conditions are adverse, he can cancel or postpone the excursion. In case of cancellation by the Alpine Guide, any deposit will be fully refunded or, in agreement with the client, retained for a possible other date.
