ARTVA Day is an essential training day for those who practice ski mountaineering and winter mountaineering , dedicated to learning the correct use of ARTVA, shovel and probe . In the event of an avalanche, timing is essential , and knowing how to intervene quickly can make the difference between life and death.

During the exercise , practical tests of research, survey and excavation will be carried out, with an in-depth study of self-rescue techniques and the use of the most modern digital ARTVA . Participants will learn to manage emergency situations, carrying out the search for one or more buried victims in the shortest possible time.

Requirements & equipment

Requirements:

  • Habituation to cold, even intense cold


Necessary material:

  • Down filled comforter
  • Shoeller or Polartec pants
  • Technical underwear
  • Goretex shell
  • Two pairs of gloves, one light and one heavy
  • Cap
  • Sunscreen, cocoa butter
  • Sunglasses

To reach the artva camp you need to walk about 1 hour uphill. You can go up using ski mountaineering equipment or snowshoes (possible rental free).

If you do not have the material, ask for it a few days in advance and, as far as possible, we will find a solution together.

ARTVA Day – Avalanche Safety & Self-Rescue Training

The ARTVA Day is a full-day training session entirely dedicated to mountain safety and avalanche self-rescue. This hands-on course, lasting 5-7 hours, is easy and suitable for everyone, regardless of experience level. It is a crucial opportunity for those who practice ski mountaineering, freeride, or winter hiking.

Training Focus & Practical Exercises

Throughout the day, participants will cover key aspects of avalanche self-rescue, including:

Hands-on avalanche transceiver (ARTVA) search drills

Probing and digging techniques

Simulated emergency scenarios where time is critical

The course will also introduce the latest digital ARTVA devices, with detailed instructions on single and multiple burial search techniques, helping participants improve stress management and team coordination in high-pressure situations.

Objectives & Safety Awareness

The goal of the ARTVA Day is to equip participants with the skills needed to respond quickly and effectively in an avalanche emergency, while increasing awareness of risk management in snowy terrain.

Locations and Logistics Details

The meeting point will be agreed upon at the time of booking to optimize travel and facilitate shared transportation among participants.

If necessary, strategic alternatives can be arranged to make transfers more convenient and efficient.

  • MS - Medium Skier

    Easy slopes, up to 30 degrees.
    Knowing how to safely descend a black slope (no snowplough) is a necessary condition.
    The possible addition of an A MSA indicates the presence of mountaineering difficulties, such as rocky sections or glaciers that may require the use of crampons, ice axe, rope, helmet and harness.

  • BS - Good Skier

    Slopes up to 40 degrees, for short and slightly exposed sections
    Knowing how to safely descend a black slope (no snowplough) is a necessary condition.
    The possible addition of an A BSA indicates the presence of mountaineering difficulties, such as rocky sections or glaciers that may require the use of crampons, ice axe, rope, helmet and harness.

  • OS - Excellent Skier

    Slopes even over 40 degrees, obligatory and exposed passages.
    Knowing how to safely descend a black slope (no snowplough) is a necessary condition.
    The possible addition of an A OSA indicates the presence of mountaineering difficulties, such as rocky sections or glaciers that may require the use of crampons, ice axe, rope, helmet and harness.

Do I have to be very fit?

Ski mountaineering is generally a fairly strenuous activity, even for the most basic climbs you need to be in good physical shape and be used to walking uphill for several hours.

How do you behave in case of bad weather?

If the mountain guide deems that the conditions are adverse, he can cancel or postpone the excursion. In case of cancellation by the mountain guide, any deposit will be fully refunded or, in agreement with the client, retained for a possible other date.

Do I need to know how to ski to go ski touring?

Yes, it is essential to know how to descend black slopes with good technique (no snowploughs).

I don't have any equipment, is it possible to rent it?

Yes, it is possible to rent it, you just need to communicate this during the registration phase.

Do you need a 4x4 to get to the meeting point?

Generally it is not necessary to have a four-wheel drive car, however since it is a strictly winter activity it is advisable to have winter tires and snow chains on board since you may have to face climbs and descents on snow-covered roads.

Can I reach the ARTVA field with the ski lift?

Yes, it's possible. Just buy the ski pass and notify the mountain guide so that the logistics can be arranged.
